Preventing Heat & Drought Stress

Preventing Heat & Drought Stress

Summer's coming with heat and drought that can turn that beautiful lawn brown and patchy.

The key? Prepare now while conditions are good.

What is Drought Stress?

Drought stress happens when grass can't get enough water. July and August bring extended dry periods plus heat, the perfect storm.

Symptoms: grass turns dull blue-green, then tan, then brown. Footprints stay visible. Lawn feels crunchy. But damage often starts before you see symptoms.

Proper Watering Basics

Most homeowners don't know they are making mistakes watering their lawn. Here are some tips on how to water correctly.

Water deeply but infrequently - 1 to 1.5 inches (you can measure this with a tuna can!) per week in one or two sessions throughout the week. Deep watering = deeper roots = better drought resistance.

Water early morning - 6-9 AM lets water soak in before evaporation and lets grass dry before nightfall (wet overnight = disease or fungus).

Let soil dry between watering - Forces roots deeper. Shallow, frequent watering = shallow roots = vulnerable lawn.

Avoid evening watering - Grass stays wet 12+ hours, creating ideal fungal disease conditions. Avoid watering after 6 pm.

The Hydrophobic Soil Problem

Even with correct watering, dry soil can become water-repellent. You turn on the sprinkler, water pools or runs off, and soil underneath stays bone-dry. The way to correct this is with aeration.

Dry soil particles develop a waxy coating that repels water. You can water for hours and never reach the root zone.

Why Soil Health Matters

Healthy soil with good structure acts like a sponge, it absorbs water and holds it where grass can access it. Poor soil lets water run off or drain too quickly.

Amendments like humic acid improve structure and water-holding capacity, but extended drought can still create penetration issues.

Introducing Moisture Manager

Moisture Manager is a wetting agent (soil surfactant) that breaks surface tension, letting water penetrate deeply and evenly. Like adding dish soap to greasy water—it spreads and soaks in instead of beading up.

Results:

  1. Water reaches roots instead of running off
  2. Soil retains moisture longer
  3. Lawn stays greener with less water
  4. Deeper, drought-resistant roots
  5. Lower water usage and cost

We offer it as a 3-application program (each lasts 4-6 weeks) for season-long protection during the hottest months.

Most customers see improvement within days, the water starts soaking in, lawn responds, dry spots disappear.

Start Now

May is perfect for starting Moisture Manager. Your soil will be primed before summer heat hits. You're preventing problems, not reacting to them.

Struggled with dry spots, brown summer patches, or water that runs off? Moisture Manager is a game-changer.
